Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Colo., closed his argument in a hearing about the constitutionality of former President Donald Trump’s second Senate impeachment trial saying, “Presidents can’t inflame insurrection in their final weeks and then walk away like nothing happened,” Neguse said.
Neguse emphasized that not impeaching Trump would allow abuses of power to happen in the future. He said that impeachment exists to protect the American people from officials who abuse power, betray them, “and for a case just like this one.”
A number of Senate Republicans have argued that the trial of former President Donald Trump is unconstitutional because he is no longer in office, while Democratic impeachment managers have argued that it is, citing precedent.
