House impeachment manager Rep. Jamie Raskin and former President Donald Trump’s defense lawyer Michael van der Veen debated whether the Senate should subpoena witnesses as part of Trump’s second impeachment trial.
Raskin argued that the Senate should subpoena Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., who released a statement Friday night recounting a phone call relayed to her by Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., during which Trump allegedly expressed sympathy for the violent mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
Van der Veen said that either the Senate should call no witnesses at all or that there should be a full investigation and depositions from an unlimited number of witnesses.
The Senate ultimately voted 55-45 to allow witnesses and more evidence for the trial.
The opposing sides spoke Feb. 13 as House impeachment managers and Trump’s defense gathered for what was expected to be the final day of the trial, which will end with a vote on whether to convict or acquit Trump of the charge of inciting an insurrection for his role in the Capitol attack.
