The U.S. Congress finally affirmed president-elect Joe Biden’s election victory early Thursday morning after the electoral college vote was interrupted by rioters who violently stormed the Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
Police confirmed a total of four people died during the day’s events. Lawmakers and press members were forced to shelter in place for hours as police attempted to regain order.
Lawmakers eventually finished counting the electoral votes despite hours of debate sparked by Republican objections. Early Thursday morning, Pence declared Joe Biden the winner of the election.
Trump said in a statement shortly after Pence’s declaration that he would support a peaceful transition of power “even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election.”
