The deadly wildfires that have killed at least eight people so far in Turkey breached a coal-fired power plant overnight Wednesday, prompting evacuations of both workers and residents. However, the government says the flames did not damage the main units, such as the boiler room, and work would resume soon.
The fires have devastated tens of thousands of hectares in parts of the country with the province of Mugla, where the plant is located, being one of the hardest hit. More than 36,000 people have been evacuated from the region so far.
While fires at the plant were extinguished by Thursday, 12 still remained burning in the region.
