House Speaker Nancy Pelosi denounced the 43 senators who made Trump’s acquittal possible as a "cowardly group of Republicans" and blamed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for not allowing the House to deliver the impeachment charge to the Senate while Trump was still in the White House.
Pelosi said McConnell is responsible for shutting down the Senate until just before Inauguration Day for the article of impeachment to be delivered, and then using that as an excuse not to vote against a former president.
Despite voting to acquit Trump, McConnell did acknowledge that Trump is "practically and morally responsible" for provoking the deadly attack on the Capitol by his supporters.
The remarks came soon after the 100-seat chamber acquitted Trump on a single charge of inciting insurrection in a 57-43 vote that failed to reach the 67-vote threshold necessary for conviction. Seven Senate Republicans joined Democrats to vote for conviction.
