U.S. President Donald Trump addressed Americans in a pre-taped video released via the White House Twitter account immediately after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to bring articles of impeachment against Trump for a second time.
“No true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence,” he said in the video, adding that thousands of National Guard members are being deployed in Washington, D.C. to ensure a peaceful transition of power.
Trump also condemned what he called an “unprecedented assault on free speech” in the days following the riot in the U.S. Capitol. Trump said, despite his earlier attacks on the results of the U.S. election, that Americans should “rise above the rancour,” and said “efforts to censor, cancel and blacklists” fellow Americans are “dangerous.”
In the lead-up to the confirmation of the Electoral College votes — which ultimately landed in favour of Biden — Trump publicly urged Vice-President Mike Pence to help his efforts and throw out the result, which Pence eventually rejected.
Trump also gave his supporters a boost into action that morning, urging them to march to the Capitol. At least four people were killed in the resulting riot.
