Long lines at gas stations amid pipeline outage, customer likens it to “toilet paper fiasco”

Long lines formed outside gas stations on Wednesday across parts of the United States after a pipeline outage caused fears of gasoline shortages.

A ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline last week halted 2.5 million barrels per day of fuel shipments. The pipeline stretches approximately 8,850 km from U.S. Gulf Coast oil refineries to consumers in Mid-Atlantic and Southeast states.

The supply crunch sparked panic buying in the U.S. Southeast, bringing long lines and high prices at gas stations ahead of the Memorial Day holiday weekend at the end of May, the traditional start of the peak summer driving season.

"It’s like the toilet paper fiasco all over again," said Dan Anderson, a gas station customer in Reston, Va. referring to the scramble for toilet paper in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

Gas stations from Florida to Virginia have begun to run dry and prices at the pump continued to rise, as the shutdown of the biggest U.S. fuel pipeline by hackers extended into its sixth day.
