India’s daily COVID-19 cases hit new world record as country faces oxygen shortages

India hit a new record globally for daily COVID-19 cases, with 346,786 new cases reported in a single day and the capital recording the equivalent of one death from COVID-19 every five minutes.

It comes as hospitals are overwhelmed, with queues forming outside of people trying to get in for help, and families claiming their loved ones infected with COVID-19 died due to a lack of oxygen.

Plants are scaling up production as they’re pushed to their limits with demand outpacing supply.

The country’s government is also utilizing military planes and trains to get oxygen to Delhi from the far corners of the country and overseas including Singapore.

The country says it plans to expand its vaccination program from people aged 45 to include all adults — some 900 million people. Sean Previl reports.
