Supporters of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris celebrated across the United States on Wednesday, with many gathering outdoors to watch the inauguration.
In Washington, D.C., several dozen people crammed around television screens outside a sports bar, jumping with applause as Biden and Harris were sworn in, less than a mile down the road on the steps of the U.S. Capitol building.
The massive crowds usually seen during presidential inaugurations were absent due to the coronavirus pandemic, meaning Americans had to watch proceedings from a distance.
"My heart is full of joy," Washington resident Patrice Johnson told Reuters outside the bar.
Meanwhile, pedestrians in New York and families in Louisiana said they were happy to see Harris sworn in as the country’s new vice-president. Her rise marks the first time a woman and a woman of color has risen to such a post in the U.S.
