Since the beginning of the pandemic, one message has been consistent – infection rates need to be kept as low as possible to avoid intensive care units being overwhelmed. Because when that happens, patients who would recover with the right care may not be able to receive it. Doctors and nurses then face the desperate choice of who to treat.
