Feds questioned about Global News investigation into clean drinking water on First Nations reserves

NDP MP Charlie Angus cited an investigation, conducted in part by Global News, in the House of Commons on Monday when he questioned what the federal government was doing to address the issue of clean drinking water on First Nations reserves.

Angus went on to lambaste what he called the government’s "three-point plan" when it comes to issues impacting Canada’s Indigenous population: "Show concern, act surprised, and do nothing."

An investigation by a consortium including Global News, APTN News, and journalism students at universities across the country, led by Concordia University’s Institute for Investigative Journalism, examined how outdated federal policies make it difficult for First Nations to gain control over their infrastructure, including water and wastewater treatment plants.

It’s a top-down challenge that begins in Ottawa, where the investigation found federal funding and funding policies for water services on reserves have chronically failed to meet needs.
