“Extreme shame:” Canadian government faces criticism on National Indigenous Peoples Day

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, the Canadian government faced criticism over its ongoing handling of Indigenous issues. NDP MP for Nunavut Mumilaaq Qaqqaq said during opening statements to the House of Commons on Monday that she felt a "tremendous amount of sadness and anger" over Indigenous communities continuously being "denied access to safe, livable spaces."

"There is nothing for anyone to be patting themselves on the back. In fact, you should all feel extreme shame," Qaqqaq addressed the House of Commons.

As Canada is under pressure to investigate former residential schools after 215 Indigenous children were found in unmarked graves in B.C., NDP MP Rachel Laney brought up that a human rights tribunal found that the government discriminated against First Nations kids.

Liberal MP Jaime Battiste asked the Minister of Justice for an update on bill C-15, a federal bill to harmonize Canada’s laws with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
