Coronavirus: Toronto officials provide update as Ontario plans for reopening | LIVE

Mayor John Tory and Toronto’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa are expected to deliver an update on the city’s COVID-19 response Monday, following an update about Ontario’s plans to gradually reopen the economy.

Toronto Public Health officials say a case of the Brazilian COVID-19 variant, which is believed to be more transmissible than other strains of the novel coronavirus, has been found in the city. In a news release Sunday, officials said the case involves a Toronto resident who is hospitalized and recently travelled from Brazil.

Last Wednesday, the city provided an update on its school reopening plan after the Ontario government announced that Toronto, as well as Peel and York Regions, will reopen facilities for students on Feb. 16.

The three regions will be the last to return to the classroom under the province’s elementary and secondary school reopening plan. Those who attend schools in the remaining 13 regions that are also closed in the province will return to in-person learning on Feb. 8.
