Canadian officials not granted permission to attend Michael Kovrig’s trial in China

Canadian officials will not be granted permission to attend the trial of Michael Kovrig on Monday, who has been detained on espionage charges in China for more than two years.

A former Canadian ambassador to China, Guy Saint-Jacques, says Michael Spavor’s connection to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will likely be used against Kovrig during the trial. Another Canadian detained in China, Michael Spavor, faced his own trial last week.

The arrest has been seen as retribution for the detainment of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou at the request of the U.S. Abigail Bimman reports.
