Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Monday the province will take the full three weeks to monitor data before deciding on the next step of the COVID-19 reopening plan.
Hinshaw identified an R-value (reproduction value) above one outside of Calgary and Edmonton as one of the main identifiers that will be monitored.
The R-value in the entire province was 1.03. Edmonton’s value was 0.93, Calgary’s was 0.95, and the rest of the province was 1.13.
Hinshaw also noted that the province will give businesses a week’s notice to prepare for re-opening, making the earliest possible date to move into Stage 2 March 8.
Alberta identified 273 new cases of COVID-19 in the province on Monday, while also recording 16 COVID-related deaths, some as a result of post-mortem examinations dating back to December 2020.
The province also saw 11 new cases of the COVID-19 variants.
