Alberta premier says new COVID-19 restrictions coming amid growing pressure to stop health crisis

With Alberta’s rise in new COVID-19 cases significantly outpacing all other parts of the country, Premier Jason Kenney says he expects to announce new public health restrictions on Tuesday in an attempt to bend the curve, though did not say what they would involve.

It comes as the premier has faced mounting pressure from health experts to take stronger action with malls, churches and restaurants still open. Kenney is also facing strong criticism after promising a tougher response to those flouting measures only to not speak out against an anti-lockdown rodeo near one community until late Sunday.

As Heather Yourex-West reports, Kenney conceded that the current measures have not gone far enough but at least one doctor is concerned if they fail, patients will need to be triaged to determine which patients will receive critical care if demand exceeds health-care resources.
