Alberta health and education officials update COVID-19 in the province | LIVE

Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro and Education Minister Adriana LaGrange will join Dr. Deena Hinshaw Thursday to update the COVID-19 situation in the province.

Thursday’s update comes as some countries have started to suspend use of the AstraZeneca vaccine temporarily.

Health authorities in Denmark, Norway and Iceland suspended the use of the shots after reports of the formation of blood clots in some people. Austria stopped using a batch while investigating a death from coagulation disorders and an illness from a pulmonary embolism.

Dr. Hinshaw sent out several tweets Thursday morning about the AstraZenca vaccine: “I want to assure Albertans that the current doses of COVIShield AstraZeneca vaccine offered in Alberta have not been linked to the side effects issues reported in some European countries linked to one lot of vaccine.

“There is currently no indication that vaccination has caused these events and the actions these countries have taken is out of an abundance of caution. We will continue watching closely and monitoring every dose of the vaccine in Alberta.”

Alberta started administering the AstraZeneca vaccine on Wednesday, with more than 11,500 bookings made that day.
