Alberta announces COVID-19 rapid testing pilot project in Calgary schools | FULL

Education Minister Adriana LaGrange announced Thursday that Alberta will be launching a rapid COVID-19 testing pilot project at two Calgary schools starting in mid-March.

One school from both the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District will participate. The schools have not been selected at this time.

The province will be providing more than 100,000 rapid testing kits as part of this program. Rapid tests will occur every week for up to three weeks, screening asymptotic students.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro also announced on Thursday that Alberta is deploying 924,000 rapid tests “to protect workers, to protect students and to protect vulnerable Albertans.”

Included in this rollout are long-term care, designated supportive living and hospice centres, which have already received the kits. According to Shandro, seniors lodges and supportive living facilities have been offered rapid-testing kits and officials are viewing the applications.

More than half-a-million kits will be offered to worksites like oil and gas, WestJet, and to workers in banking, telecommunications and transportation.

The Cargill meat-packing plant in High River will also use rapid testing. Disscussions with the Olymel plant in Red Deer are ongoing.
